The 26th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN, Festival Director SHIN Chul) has finalized the list of instructors and participants that will be taking part in this year’s Fantastic Film School. Set to take place from July 7 to 13, this year’s program will be held both on and offline, with the offline events returning to the scale of pre-pandemic years.

This year’s dean is horror film expert and maestro, director/producer Brian YUZNA. As a legendary cult-horror director, Brian has directed and produced over 50 films, including Re-Animator (1985) From Beyond (1986) Society (1989), and Dagon (2001). A total of 8 film industry professionals will be on hand to serve as instructors this year, including Yee Wei CHAI, Mattie DO, Christopher LARSEN, Andrew T. HUNT, Alexandre O. PHILIPPE, Annick MAHNERT, and LEE Dongha. The instructors will be leading 19 participants from 10 countries.

Instructor Mattie DO, a participant of the 2016 Fantastic Film School herself, is Laos’ first and only female filmmaker. The film, Long Walk (2019), directed by DO, premiered at the 2019 Venice Film Festival and garnered DO the award for best director at the Sitges Film Festival, as well as the German Independence Honorary Tribute Award at the 2021 Oldenburg International Film Festival. Refer to the table below for the full list of instructors and their profiles.

This year’s master class will be taught by dean Brian YUZNA. After screening two of his most notable films, Society and Dagon, directors LEE Kyoungmi and YIM Pilsung will host the master class.

Every year, Fantastic Film School graduates grow into rising filmmakers and achieve outstanding results at international film festivals. Director JOUNG Yumi (2009 graduate) was invited to take part in the shorts competition at the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival, for her animated short, House of Existence. Director LIM Yeonjung’s (2015 graduate) documentary, Breakthrough, was a JEONJU lab project selection this year at the Jeonju International Film Festival. NAKANISHI Mai (2013 graduate) won a special mention for her film, Swallow, at the 2022 Tempere Film Festival in Finland. CHUANG Shiang-an (2018 graduate) won a TAICA Original award at the 2021 Golden Horse Film Promotion event for the project, Mama Pingpong Social Club.

Fantastic Film School graduates Jacen TAN (Singapore), Maaria SAYED (India), and Nikolas RED (Philippines) each had a project that became an official selection of this year’s BIFAN NAFF Project Market It Project program, a program that discovers new genre film projects. While BIFAN is in session this year, these directors will have one-on-one business meetings with investors, distributors, and possible co-production partners from all over the world.

Operated by BIFAN’s Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF), Fantastic Film School is the world’s first genre film education and networking program. For 7 days, participants take classes that are part of a practical-based curriculum, ranging from genre film production to sales and distribution.

The 26th BIFAN is set to take place from July 7 to 17. Under the festival’s slogan, “Stay Strange,” BIFAN will be offering on and offline screenings and audience events for 11 days to guests from around the globe.
