In January 1992, Chung Ju-yung founded the United National Party and exposed the fact that he had paid billions of won to former presidents. Determined to break the link between politics and economics, he ran in the 14th presidential election. His short political career ran the course of a year, and 1992 is remembered as one of the only times of defeat. We re-examine the modern history of South Korea, through the political conflicts and events of the 14th presidential race, along with the mythical ascent of a man born with bare fists, former honorary chairman of Hyundai Group, Chung Ju-yung

Post Modern Korea

7.10 Sat. 13:00 GV Bucheon Art Bunker B39 B1F Bunker

In the early 1990s, South Korea started regaining confidence in itself. “We hosted one of the most successful Olympic Games ever. We are rich enough. Nobody can look down on us now. We are finally SOMEBODY.” But there was one problem. Korea’s past history, especially in relation to Japan, is something many Koreans wish to forget and erase from the history books if possible. The newly elected president Kim Young-sam had to do something about it. So he decides to tear down the iconic Japanese colonial era government building. Will it be enough to make straight Korea’s “distorted” history?

In the late 1980s, the expansion of democracy and the rapid economic growth in South Korea caused major changes in the lives of women. Women’s awareness of human rights was also gradually increasing. However, women were not yet the subjects of an equal democratic society. In reality, women had to face the prejudice and sexual violence by men still remaining in the patriarchal convention. Women fight to enact a special law on sexual violence. A woman murdered a man, who raped her when she was nine, after 21 years and said “I didn’t kill a human being, I killed a beast.” She looks back at the age of beasts when human trafficking and kidnapping of women became daily life issues for women.

In the 1980s, the Korean music industry had a pattern of squeezing musicians without proper regulation. In spite of this environment, the pioneering musicians who wanted new sounds and performances, gave birth to the first generation of electronic music and hip-hop. These young musicians who were equipped with inexpensive MIDI devices, laid the foundation of K-Pop by creating digital beats for dance. Through the stories of the teen musicians who first experienced the changes in the 1990s when “music” was changed to “music industry,” we can look at Korean music from a different perspective and what makes “K-Pop” as a genre.
